The PGA tournament season is a brutal grind. It's hard enough for the players to stay focused, let alone golf enthusiasts. Welcome to the Fabulous 4ore, the podcast that focuses exclusively on the MAJORS: The Masters, The PGA Championship, The U.S. Open, and the Open Championship. Get out of the heavy rough and join Davo and Baron as they preview, review, and tee up the history-making moments past and present on golf's biggest stage. Be on the lookout for an occasional shank in the conversation as we tend to get distracted from time to time.

Tune in to our interview with 4 time Emmy Award winning journalist and sportscaster, Barry Tompkins. Barry's career spans over 4 decades. He became widely known as the ringside blow-by-blow announcer for HBO Boxing in its heyday alongside Sugar Ray Leonard. He was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame. But Barry covered over 40 different sports and has seen more "majors" in sports than most of us combined. He is a great storyteller, smart as whip and funny to boot.

Homage to Golf by Sandy Tatum

My reflections on the fascination with golf have turned up a few thoughts I am moved to share with you.

There are what can be identified as the externals:

  • The aesthetics of the playing fields;

  • The camaraderie;

  • The communing with nature;

  •  The refuge that a few hours on a golf course provides from a world embroiled in such turmoil.

What makes the pursuit so utterly compelling are the internals, i.e., the challenges:

So much more is involved than accomplishing the techniques required to play respectably;

  • There are the satisfactions of success and frustrations of failure;

  • There is the modification of expectations to fit the reality;

  • There is the process of accomodating all of that in a mode that never loses connection with how satisfying giving your all can be regardless of what score you make

And then there are the people with whom the game puts you in contact.

"The main reason for the lure of golf has to do with the unique brand of companionship possible only to the psychological type that unites the little boy asking to be king with a sensible adult who knows he will never make it."
